Lebanon
GIZ has been working in Lebanon since 1995 (until 2011 as the former GTZ). Since the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, Germany has been providing support for civil reconstruction of the country. Together with the reconstruction aid agreed within the framework of the Stockholm Conference held in August 2006 and to be provided by the international community, this support promotes broad and sustainable stabilisation of the political situation in Lebanon. GIZ focuses its efforts on three areas: vocational training and the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, the drinking water supply and sanitation systems, and environmental protection. A border management project aims to curb cross-border smuggling and illegal arms dealing. International programmes and projects are active in vocational training, in the water sector and in implementing the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
