Jordan is a priority partner country for German development cooperation. For 30 years GTZ has been working there successfully on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Jordan’s chief development problem is its scarcity of natural resources. Its industry is weak and population growth is high at 3 percent.

The very young population is facing a lack of productive sources of income. There is a gaping rural/urban divide. Around one third of the population of five million live in relative poverty. Women are disadvantaged over men in their economic and social development.

The existing water resources cannot meet the needs of a constantly growing population. However, an adequate water supply is the basic prerequisite for Jordan’s development. In a region already gripped by crises, water promises to be yet another potential source of conflict.

For this reason, in the early 1990s GTZ stepped up its activities in the water sector and, by agreement with the German and Jordanian Governments, has been focusing since 2001 on the priority area water, water-related environmental and resource protection.

GTZ is also working on projects to reduce poverty and promote institutions. At supra-regional level, projects on vocational training and climate protection are carried out.

Since 1979 GTZ has maintained an office in Amman.
