Algeria
Algeria is a partner country of German and international development cooperation. GTZ has been engaged in Algeria since 1974, working on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Algeria is currently undergoing a process of profound political and economic transformation. Alongside the phenomena typical for such a process, it also faces many other constraints to development.
These include high population growth, rural to urban migration, rapid urbanisation and the exhaustion of natural resources. These processes are connected to high population pressure in the north of the country, high unemployment, particularly among young people, and inadequate infrastructure, especially in the water and environment sectors. Against this background, and in line with the agreement negotiated between the German and Algerian governments, GTZ’s work focuses on the following priority areas:
In these priority areas, GTZ contributes through programmes and projects that aim to improve living conditions and health, especially for the poorer population. The protection and responsible use of natural resources is just as vital for this as are the strengthening of companies' competitiveness and the adaptation of vocational training to meet the demands of the labour market.
