Priority areas in AlgeriaIn Algeria, GTZ is carrying out projects and programmes which are strategically and conceptually interconnected. The work is designed to support the development strategies of Algeria, and also takes into account the activities of the other international donors in the country. The following priority areas were agreed in negotiations between the German and Algerian governments: Sustainable economic development Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are being prepared for the challenges of the planned Euro-Mediterranean free trade area. The aim is for them to make a contribution to improving economic and social conditions. By 2017, customs restrictions between the European Union and Algeria are to be removed. Competition in the Algerian market will become much tougher. Algerian enterprises will need to adapt to the conditions of the global economy in good time. However, in this respect problems and constraints exist within both state-run and private institutions. Their cooperation needs to be harmonised and their potential for innovation strengthened. This is particularly true of small and medium-scale industry in Algeria. Sustainable integrated resource management for the water sector and the environment As one of the countries with the greatest water scarcity in the world, Algeria in particular has a duty to protect its scant resources. In many places, environmental degradation and destruction due to years of neglect of environmental issues are conspicuous and need to be addressed during the planning and implementation of infrastructure projects. GTZ's activities in this field are based on this assessment of the situation and promote the integrated use of resources. In this way, socially disadvantaged groups of the population attain improved access to water and sanitation services. Businesses are helped to practise energy efficient and environmentally sound production. The development of urban waste disposal systems reduces the pressures on the inhabitants. Advisory services and training for environmental institutions at national and local levels, as well as the establishment and application of environmental laws, help reduce and avoid environmental pollution. |
