Work by GTZ International Services in Algeria focuses chiefly on economic reform and environmental protection. We are now, for example, in the process of advising the Ministry of Industry about the emerging Euro-Mediterranean free-trade zone and assisting in the country’s transition from a planned to a free-market economy. As part of our efforts in this context, we are helping develop a competitive industrial policy and are supporting the alignment of Algeria’s legal system with the demands of a free market. Other projects target industrial pollution in Algeria: on behalf of the World Bank, we are helping to build new environmental institutions and to strengthen environmental legislation, for example by working on the framework for the management of dangerous industrial goods or by providing planning support for the construction of a hazardous waste management facility in Bir el Ater.
