Energy Programme for BrazilProject description
Title: Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency
ContextBrazil's energy system emits comparatively low levels of CO2. The inadequate security of supply, however, puts growth of the Brazilian economy at risk. The big challenge is to increase energy security without incurring massive costs and without increasing emissions. State-of-the-art energy efficiency technologies and renewable energy sources can contribute significantly to achieving this goal Brazil has enormous potential as regards energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Nevertheless, the Brazilian government is considering securing the country's energy supply through huge expansion in large-scale hydropower, nuclear power and fossil-fuelled thermal power stations. What's more, the effectiveness of the government's programmes to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources is limited. For this reason, the topics of energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) receive inadequate consideration in Brazil's energy supply policy. ObjectiveThe role of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Brazil's energy supply is strengthened. ApproachThe energy programme comprises four components:
As complementary measures, two other projects are also being conducted on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU):
The programme employs a multi-level approach:
This programme is being executed in close collaboration with KfW Entwicklungsbank. It supports the development of a safe and sustainable energy system, which in turn avoids greenhouse gas emissions, reduces technological risks and strengthens markets for sustainable energy services. Downloads
