Priority areas in Peru

Following consultation with the Peruvian Government, GIZ is focusing on three priority areas in the country. GIZ in Peru is also involved in a number of regional projects, for example initiatives concentrating on adapting to climate change, tackling violence against women and strengthening the rights of the indigenous population. In addition, German development cooperation is implementing projects that support environmental protection and climate change mitigation, reconstruction of the regions worst affected by the 2007 earthquake (Ica and Huancavelica), and efforts to improve energy supplies for poorer families. GIZ also contributes to various regional programmes.

Democracy, civil society and public administration

German development cooperation supports the government reforms within the framework of the decentralisation process for political and social participation by excluded population groups. It is helping to modernise public administration, increase transparency and strengthen the controlling bodies. In addition, development cooperation supports the judicial reform process, civil protection and observance of human rights.

Drinking water supply and wastewater disposal

GIZ is helping to secure water supply and wastewater disposal, in particular for poorer population groups. The support is contributing to enhancing the legal and administrative frameworks, developing the institutional competencies of actors in the water sector and the skills of their staff, strengthening the institutional capacities of selected urban water utilities, and expanding and upgrading infrastructure.

Sustainable rural development, natural resource management and climate change

Development cooperation promotes sustainable rural development and natural resources management as well as the protection and conservation of biodiversity. GIZ also supports measures focusing on reducing and adapting to climate change. This is an important contribution to poverty reduction in rural areas.
