Public infrastructure

Political instability and the Kosovo crisis have meant that important reforms in the public infrastructure sector have not been consistently pursued.

As part of its bilateral cooperation activities and on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ is implementing an advisory project on energy efficiency.

Private households account for 55 % of electricity consumption in Serbia. The inefficient use of power in households for heating, hot water, electrical appliances and lighting, is responsible for the fact that power generating capacities are often pushed to their limits, especially in winter.

GIZ is supporting selected municipalities in their efforts to establish advisory services for households and associations of home owners, to create financial incentives to invest in energy efficiency and to take steps to improve energy efficiency in households.

GIZ works frequently with KfW Entwicklungsbank to identify sustainable municipal infrastructure investments in the energy efficiency sector, and to perform the preparatory planning.
