GTZ in Georgia

GTZ has been active in Georgia on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1992. It is supporting the country’s transition process towards establishing a social and ecological market economy and democracy.

Our work in Georgia also includes commissions from other German public sector clients. For example, we are rehabilitating degraded landscapes on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

Following the Rose Revolution in November 2003, the new Government in Georgia initiated several successful political and economic reforms which have helped combat corruption.

The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) presents Georgia with fresh challenges. On the one hand, the country is striving to establish closer ties with European structures by strengthening human rights through democratic institutions and by adapting to EU norms and standards. On the other hand, the local and regional infrastructure must be modernised. The aim is to improve the living conditions of a still largely poor population. GTZ makes an effective contribution to the economic reintegration of internally displaced persons, for instance through training measures and microcredit financing.

GTZ contributes to crisis prevention in the southern Caucasus as part of the German Federal Government’s Caucasus Initiative (CI). Most of the programmes and projects related to the priority areas are implemented across the countries of the region. GTZ has maintained a presence in the South Caucasus since 2006. Through its regional office in Georgia, it administers the three southern Caucasian countries of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
