Priority areas in Pakistan

GTZ activities in projects and programmes are part of an overarching strategic concept. The gouvernments of Pakistan and Germany have set the following priority areas within this concept:

Basic education

Through its strategic-integral approach, Pakistani-German cooperation contributes to the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) by involving educational institutions at all levels – government, provincial and district - with the focus on improving quality, education policy and programme planning.

Basic health, family planning and HIV/AIDS

Pakistan faces large problems in the health service and with population growth. The health indicators for Pakistan are amongst the lowest in Asia. High rates of childbirth deaths and infant mortality are connected with sub-standard health care for the population.

Renewable energies and energy efficiency

Top priority is attached to renewable energies and energy efficiency. This is apparent from the Pakistan Vision 2025 and Germany's Johannisburg commitments in 2002. The German Government has made plain its interest in promoting renewable energies in Pakistan, including measures to improve energy efficiency.

Good Governance - Democracy and civil society

In recent years, the Pakistani Government has taken reform steps to strengthen democratic institutions, centering on administrative decentralization. This reform process also includes strengthening and redefining the role of women in Pakistani society. Germany has pledged support to Pakistan in this area.
