GTZ International Services in Indonesia

In Indonesia, GTZ International Services (GTZ IS) is currently operating in the fields of environmental protection and natural resource conservation, and the modernisation of state structures.

GTZ IS has been commissioned by the European Commission to set up a forest fire management system at the province and village level in South Sumatra. The Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra are at particularly high risk of forest fire. Indeed, during the El Niño years of 1982/83 and 1997/98, forest fires destroyed tropical rain forests, agricultural land and settlements totalling around 15 million hectares.

Within the scope of the Kyoto Protocol, the international community came to an agreement on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which provides for extensive cooperation between industrialised and developing nations on the reduction of CO2 emissions. On behalf of the Asian Development Bank, GTZ IS is now helping to launch the CDM in Indonesia. Our task is to advise the Indonesian Government on CDM application and on the institutional preconditions. Furthermore, we are assisting in the development of CDM projects.

Since the tsunami disaster of 26 December 2004, GTZ IS has been supporting the region around Aceh in the north of Sumatra. Mandated by the European Commission, we are advising the local government authorities to help them steer and coordinate reconstruction and peacebuilding activities in their respective districts. As such, the programme has a key role to play in Aceh’s current development process by filling the gap between emergency aid and reconstruction on the one hand and post-conflict measures with a longer-term orientation on the other. The programme not only covers those regions affected by the tsunami, but is geared to all local governments and parliaments at the district level in the entire province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.
