Priority areas in MongoliaOn behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GTZ has been supporting the Mongolian Government in establishing a modern market economy since 1991. It has maintained an office in Ulan Bator since 1998; this was superseded in 2006 by a 'Deutsches Haus', the local premises shared by GTZ, DED and KfW Entwicklungsbank. Cooperation focused initially on rural development projects and measures to develop market-economy structures. Support was also provided on a number of occasions in connection with crises and natural disasters. Today, GTZ is engaged in the priority areas of sustainable economic development and environmental policy, including energy efficiency and renewable energies. The two areas are closely interlinked. In harmony with Mongolia's goals, GTZ is supporting the coherence of environmental protection and economic development by promoting sustainable natural resource management. This is designed not only to protect the environment, but also to help reduce poverty, as envisaged in the Programme of Action 2015. Technical cooperation with Mongolia focuses primarily on advising the Mongolian Government on appropriate natural resource management, the efficient delivery of power generated from fossil fuels and renewables, the creation of an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth, and efficient administrative structures. Sustainable development is currently being supported through nine projects and programmes in various sectors. |
