New partnership for Africa's development (NEPAD)NEPAD stands for New Partnership for Africa’s Development. It is an African initiative that was founded in 2001, led by the heads of state of Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria and Senegal. The G8 states consider it to be the most important development initiative for Africa. Since 2003, GIZ (former GTZ) has supported the work of the NEPAD secretariat on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in South Africa. The positive impact of the initiative on the G8 states has manifested itself in their G8 Africa Action Plan, which has set about to support the new dynamics of self-responsibility in Africa on the donor side. This is the other part of the “new partnership”, which plans to establish itself not just between the African states but also between Africa and the donors.
