Priority areas in NamibiaTo reduce poverty and promote employment, in 2001 the governments of Namibia and Germany agreed on the following three priority areas for cooperation:
Natural resources management and rural developmentThe sustainable and equitable management of natural resources is the core element of the poverty reduction strategy. To this end, GTZ supports land reform activities, sustainable natural resource management, the Namibia Programme to Combat Desertification and the National Biodiversity Programme.
TransportGTZ promotes the road transport sector in planning, organising and financing the road network. Its main focus is on economic efficiency criteria. The projects enhances the capacity of the institutions that are responsible for the transport sector while improving the processes and methods employed to plan and maintain the road network. A further task is to provide training for local experts.
Economic promotionIn order to strengthen the economy, GTZ is supporting the small-scale enterprises sector in Namibia. The most important aims are to improve access of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) to financial resources and general advisory services. GTZ also supports the coordination between local stakeholders and regional authorities. Further to the activities undertaken in the three agreed priority areas, Germany and Namibia also cooperate at supra-project level on good governance, gender equity and HIV/AIDS prevention. |
