GTZ International Services in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Despite its wealth of natural resources, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has suffered an economic downward trend since the 1980s. For a long time, the country had to bear the burdens of civil war and the influx of large numbers of refugees from neighbouring countries. In recent years, there has been greater political stability, which has also led to increasing willingness on the part of international donors to invest. The World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) are jointly financing a variety of prevention and health care programmes, including, for example, the national HIV/AIDS programme. GTZ International Services (GTZ IS) advises and supports the Ministry of Public Health in carrying out the national HIV/AIDS programme. The aim is to see that the Ministry and all participating institutions are in a position to carry out HIV/AIDS prevention programmes on their own.
