Support for the GFATM-financed programmes in Congo

Project description

Title: Support for the GFATM-financed programmes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Commissioned by: Entwicklungsprogramm der Vereinten Nationen (UNDP)
Financier: Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM)
Country: Congo
Overall term: August 2005 to July 2006

Context

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) is making more than US$ 60 million available to the Democratic Republic of the Congo for various programmes. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has been commissioned to administer these funds. GTZ IS supports the UNDP in implementing the larger project components and handling financing. We coordinate individual programme components that are being implemented in close cooperation with smaller national organisations.

Objective

The objective is to promote quick and efficient expansion of programmes that serve to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. International quality standards are to be maintained and local staff trained to be able to manage these complex projects and programmes on their own.

Approach

The project focuses on the five provinces of Kinshasa, Katanga, Orientale, Kasai Oriental and Sud Kivu and is geared to the following service areas:

  • improvement of advisory services and their accessibility, in order, for example, to sensitise mothers to the problem of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. This also involves encouraging mothers to undergo HIV testing and medical treatment for newborns.
  • improvements in the treatment of people infected with HIV/AIDS through information and education and more widespread testing for HIV
  • improvement of advisory services and the accessibility of health care centres
    optimisation of medication supplies
  • rehabilitation of the infrastructure for blood-transfusion testing to ensure safe transfusions. This includes supplying the necessary materials and the training of the staff members responsible for carrying out the tests. The mobilisation of blood donors is to be promoted as well.
