HIV/AIDS Prevention on the Transport Corridor Abidjan – LagosProject description
Title: HIV/AIDS Prevention on the Transport Corridor Abidjan – Lagos
ContextInternational studies show that HIV/AIDS spreads with particular virulence along the routes used for large-scale transport of goods. This is due to the comparatively high degree of mobility of persons employed in the long-haul transport of goods, who tend to satisfy their sexual needs along these routes. Their constant movement is conducive to frequent changes of sexual partner, a very critical factor in the spread of HIV/AIDS. The initiative being implemented by GTZ IS along the Abidjan-Lagos corridor is one of the first projects in West Africa to respond to this phenomenon. It attempts to use a regional approach to substantially check the spread of HIV/AIDS. ObjectiveThe project’s objective is to counteract any further spread of HIV/AIDS along the Abidjan-Lagos corridor, primarily through better education and information about prevention. The supply of and access to basic counselling and care are to be improved – particularly for susceptible groups. The project's primary focus is addressing prostitutes, employees in the transport sector, other mobile population groups and the local population along the corridor. ApproachGTZ IS is active in the following four components: 1. Management of project accounts 2. Procurement services 3. System development 4. Technical support in the implementation of small-scale measures |
