GTZ in Eritrea

After Eritrean independance from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrea and Germany cooperated closely until 1997 in agriculture and resource conservation, drinking water supply, urban development and housing construction, primary and vocational management consultancy.

With the exception of the water and basic education sectors, Eritrea chose to conclude cooperation in 1997; due to the outbreak of the war with Ethiopia in 1998, these projects were also suspended. After the war ended, the Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) agreed in 2001 to resume cooperation with the Eritrean Government in the water sector. This cooperation was concluded in December 2007.
