Zambia is a priority partner country for German development cooperation. GTZ has been working there since 1966 on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Since the democratic change of government in 1991, Zambia has implemented a comprehensive programme for economic and socio-political adjustment. The objective is the resusitation of the Zambian economy. This programme is regarded as the most important basis for making long-term reductions in country’s widespread poverty.

GTZ supports this policy, in agreement with the Zambian Government, in the following priority areas:

  • Decentralisation
  • Water
  • Governance, state and civil society

GTZ supports the government’s reform processes both in advising the ministries responsible for the formulation and implementation of policy at a national level, and with concrete implementation measures at a regional and local level. Non-governmental organisations and networks are also important partners.
GTZ has been represented by an office in the capital city, Lusaka, since 1982.
