GTZ in Mali

Mali is a priority partner country in German and international Development Cooperation.

GTZ has been working in Mali for 25 years on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

With almost two thirds of the population living below the poverty threshold, Mali counts as one of the poorest countries in the world. The country is more than three times the size of Germany. While the southern part lies in the transitional zone between Sahel and Sudan, the northern part is mostly in the Sahara Desert, which covers one third of the national territory.

The country has a predominantly hot and dry climate with heavy rainfall in the rainy season which is often unequally distributed. Major problems to be adressed are low productivity in the traditional agricultural and livestock sector, high population growth and a low literacy level. Also cause for concern are a substantial rural-to-urban migration, a limited export base and dependence on trends in world market prices for export commodities and key imported goods.

Women are frequently disadvantaged compared to men in their economic and social development. Another serious development problem is the growing scarcity of natural resources, and particularly cultivatable land. Large areas are threatened by desertification as a result of overuse.

Technical cooperation projects are aligned with the Mali poverty reduction strategy, and are concentrated in the regions Koulikoro, Ségou, Mopti and Timbuktu. After consultation between the German and Mali Governments, GTZ work is concentrating on the following priority areas:

The GTZ supports the Malian Government’s reform processes both with advice to the ministries on policy formation and implementation at national level and through concrete implementation measures at regional and local levels. There are also projects in progress on basic education, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and advising the economy and finance ministry.

Within the framework of German Development Cooperation in Mali, GTZ works with the following partners in cooperation:

  • KfW Entwicklungsbank (development bank)
  • German Development Service (DED)

GTZ also works with the following international organisation:

  • World Food Programme (WFP)

Since 1980 GTZ has maintained an office in the capital, Bamako.
