Since 1995, GTZ has been working in Angola on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In addition, GTZ International Services also works in the country for other international organisations.

The social turmoil and population displacements that occurred during Angola’s decolonisation and independence from Portugal in 1975 were followed by a 27-year civil war. This conflict took on an international dimension through the direct and indirect participation of other countries and in the context of the Cold War. After several failed peace accords, the war ended in 2002. In the course of this civil war, about 1.5 million people lost their lives and 4 million became refugees in their own country. Angola suffers from a high infant mortality rate. Nearly every fourth child dies before reaching the age of five.

As part of German development cooperation with Angola, GTZ works with international cooperation partners such as the European Union, World Bank, and UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

GTZ has maintained an office in Luanda since 1999.
