Fertile soils and rich mineral deposits, varied landscapes and a port as a gateway to the world – Guinea has the potential for its economy, society and tourism to develop. Guinea’s policy makers have not yet managed to tap this potential, however. Instead, the country is affected by political unrest, regular strikes and corruption. Guinea is at the lower end of the United Nations Human Development Index. Since the mid 1990s, poverty among the eight million Guineans has worsened and half of the population live on less than US$ 1 a day.

GTZ has been active in Guinea on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since the late 1980s.

GTZ’s activities in Guinea centre on improving the conditions for Guinea’s economic and social development and the living conditions of the population, particularly in the rural regions of Central and Upper Guinea.

GTZ supports and promotes reform processes in the education and health sectors, in the national poverty reduction strategy and in the field of integrated food security.
