Knowledge Powers Development – Sharing experience, shaping the future

Knowledge Powers Development – This thought-provoking motto attracted around 500 guests from the worlds of politics, business, science and civil society to the Eschborn Dialogue on 5 and 6 September 2006.
What does the arrival of 1000 illegal African immigrants in the Canary Isles have to do with the Eschborn Dialogue 2006? "This breakneck act showed us just how important knowledge and education are in overcoming the problems of people living in developing countries," said Jutta Limbach, President of the Goethe-Institut. She pointed out that these predominantly young people have no future in their home countries. "If we want to effect long-term changes in Africa, we can't just think about hungry stomachs; we must also consider people's thirst for knowledge." Her topical example resonated with the core aspect of the Eschborn Dialogue 2006: the contribution of Development Cooperation to overcoming the knowledge gap.

In workshops and panel discussions the participants discussed issues such as the relationship between knowledge and political action, the importance of knowledge for democratic change processes and the need for cooperation between academics and practitioners in development processes.

The Dialogue's concluding brochure will be available from the website soon.
