Linking migration and development enables more appropriate response to the varying needs of stakeholders. GIZ, on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), devises appropriate mechanisms and concepts for development cooperation to strengthen the positive effects of migration and lessen its risks. The focus here is divided among the countries of origin, the host countries and the migrants themselves.
Diaspora Engagement
Diaspora communities – i.e., migrant communities in host countries – often sponsor social improvements in their countries of origin. Targeted cooperation between these diaspora communities and German development cooperation generates new partnerships and pools know-how from both sides.

Remittances
For many of the partner countries of German development cooperation, a key factor is the money (remittances) that migrants send to families and friends in the homeland. GIZ has taken up this issue to ensure that money reaches recipients as safely and cheaply as possible.

Policy Consultancy
Migration policy concerns not only the EU and host countries: the countries of origin, too, must integrate the issue into their national development strategies. In a spirit of partnership, GIZ provides a consultancy package for this.

Private Sector
In addition to social activities, migrants are active in business, so that they also promote economic development in their countries of origin. Links to development-policy programmes are often expedient because many such programmes work to improve the framework conditions for private-sector initiatives. GIZ promotes and facilitates cooperation of this kind.
