Migration offers both potentials and risks - for the countries of origin and the host countries. This fact is now recognised internationally.

At present, however, our experience regarding ways to magnify the positive impacts of migrant activity (e.g. their investments) and counteract the negative effects such as the brain drain (migration of highly skilled professionals) and the care drain (migration of health care personnel) is limited.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has thus commissioned GTZ to implement a consulting intervention on migration and development. Its aim is to develop strategies and tools that promote development policy potentials and that can be used to counter the risks of migration.
