SuSanA (Sustainable Sanitation Alliance)
Our main cooperation partners are the SuSanA members. We share our knowledge in various working groups.
Cooperation on project level
For the implementation of pilot and demonstration projects, the GIZ ecosan program cooperates with a wide range of partners:
- regional GIZ projects and their local partners in the sector of water and sanitation, rural and urban development and private sector promotion. Such cooperation takes place, for example, in Algeria, China, the Philippines, India, Kenya, Eritrea and Yemen.
- other German Development Cooperation organisations, including the KfW development bank.
- donor organisations from other countries and international NGOs and
- local authorities and national NGOs.
- the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the case of the demonstration project in the GIZ headquarter in Eschborn.
Programmes and networks
International networking is one of the main focuses of the GIZ ecosan program. We cooperate closely with other organisations active in the promotion and development of ecological sanitation.
International ecosan programmes
Close ties exist particularly with the EcoSanRes (Ecological Sanitation Research) programme financed by the Swedish government (SEI), the ISSUE (Integrated Support for Sustainable Urban Envorinment) programme financed by the Dutch government, the EcoSan Club in Austria and with partners in Norway.
International organisations with ecosan activities
The increasing interest in ecological concepts has lead many other international organisations to start ecosan activities and to cooperate on various levels with GIZ, including the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), World Bank's Water and Sanitation Program (WSP), UNESCO, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Water Association (IWA), the European Union (EU) and more.
National ecosan programmes and networks
The GIZ ecosan project also cooperates with national programmes, networks, working groups and other initiatives in many countries, for example with the German Water Association (DWA), the Innovative Ecological Sanitation Network India (IESNI), the Philippine Ecosan Network (PEN) and more.
Cooperation with education and research institutions
To disseminate the knowledge about ecosan, GIZ ecosan program cooperates with teaching institutions from around the world.
