Technical approach

Ecosan concepts place a focus on the reuse of wastewater and excreta so that nutrients and organic matter contained within them can be used in agriculture or for energy (biogas) production. This offers an alternative approach to conventional wastewater treatment systems where wastewater is typically seen under the aspect of disposal only.

"Productive" sanitation systems can produce irrigation water, fertiliser or biogas. They might be better maintained because of their additional advantages.
