Aims and activities - Conceptual approach

Our Aims
The aims of the GIZ ecosan program are to establish ecological sanitation concepts as an internationally recognised alternative approach to sanitation and to improve the sustainability of water and sanitation projects in developing countries.

  • Collection: If feasible and appropriate, separate collection of (most) waste components, with minimal dilution water.
Collection system may already lead to (partial) treatment.
  • Treatment: Treatment that will allow safe reuse (safe for public health and for environment); pathogen destruction is a key requirement.
  • Utilisation: Beneficial reuse which recycles water, nutrients and organic matter to the soil or aquaculture (or for other reuse applications). Ecosan systems can also produce renewable energy from biogas systems.

The ecosan approach

Our Activities
The activities of the GIZ ecosan program are in three main areas:

  • Knowledge management: support the worldwide ecosan network through collecting, developing and disseminating knowledge and information on ecosan issues.
  • Project support: help design and implement ecosan research, demonstration and up-scaling projects worldwide.
  • Networking: We were one of the founders of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) and currently carry out the secretariat functions of this worldwide network. The aim of SuSanA is the promotion of sustainable sanitation.
