Eco-efficiency

The aim of eco-efficiency is that companies and local authorities operate efficiently while reducing environmental pollution caused by production processes and products.

Economic development is a prerequisite for improving living conditions of people in developing countries. However, economic growth and the expansion of production capacities often have a negative impact on the environment, and especially on ecosystems, industrial workers, and people living close to production facilities - generally poorer population groups.

The adverse effects of accelerated industrialisation can negate economic progress and impede opportunities for future development. The eco-efficiency approach facilitates a balance between reducing poverty, attaining economic development goals, and conserving and safeguarding resources, ecosystems and environmental quality. Support primarily targets small and medium-sized enterprises, with the aim of enhancing their competitiveness and the environmental soundness of their operations through the more efficient use of resources.
