Energy efficiencyBenefits – what we are aiming forThe global potential for reducing energy consumption is enormous. According to the projections of the World Energy Assessment, it amounts to about 30 percent in OECD countries and as much as 30 - 50 percent in developing countries. Efficient use of energy is therefore an effective strategy for avoiding current and expected shortfalls in energy supply. Additional benefits and opportunities related to energy efficiency are:
The potential for substantial energy efficiency exists in virtually every sector. Whether it be in power stations, transport of electricity, or the major consumer groups: industry, transportation, homes and public facilities. More efficient electricity consumption frees up power plant capacities. Investment in new power stations can therefore be deferred and the capital is available for other investments. In the power sector the focus is on efficiency increases in power generation, transmission and distribution. Power producers can thereby reduce costs and improve the reliability of supply. Without additional input of fuel, existing power plants can produce more electricity while reducing their adverse environmental impact. Reduced inefficiency in the public grid results in more customers being supplied for the same amount of electricity generated. In the trade and industry sector, energy is often used very inefficiently. However, the demand for energy from this sector will continue to increase substantially due to economic growth. Investing in energy efficiency measures in this sector will be noticeably beneficial. These investments allow enterprises to reduce costs, to improve quality, to gain a competitive advantage and to prepare for future environmental standards. In the transport sector, vehicle owners can reduce their costs by consuming less fuel. They can decrease emissions and even improve the life expectancy of their vehicles. Further Information on our activities in this sector can be found under: In many climate zones, much of the energy used by private households and public facilities is for heating or air-conditioning. Modern building concepts, energy-efficient installations, and insulation reduce consumption, emissions and running costs and at the same time improve comfort. In many cases the higher initial costs are soon recouped by savings on running costs. Governments that offer incentives for energy efficiency, also contribute to the creation of new jobs in industry and the service sector. Such strategies help to strengthen the national economy.
