Cooperation GIZ - UNEP

The GIZ wind energy programme TERNA and the SWERA project by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) pool their individual strengths for greater impact in the pursuit of common goals.

Under SWERA (Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment), maps of potential wind and solar resources are drawn up for selected developing and emergent countries. Wherever the SWERA wind maps identify good wind potential, TERNA can pick up the baton by carrying out detailed wind measurements at potential sites for wind farms and supporting the planning process.

TERNA and SWERA have been cooperating on this basis for a number of years:

  • TERNA informs SWERA about wind measurements in partner countries and makes data available that can be used in the maps of wind power potential.
  • SWERA provides maps of wind power potential and its own wind data, and points interested parties in the direction of TERNA as an appropriate follow-up programme.

After the SWERA project comes to an end in mid-2006, cooperation is set to continue with a possible UNEP follow-on programme.
