Latin America / Caribbean

Much like in Africa, the use of wind energy in Latin America and the Caribbean is currently still in its infancy, with roughly 547 MW of installed capacity at the beginning of 2008 (out of the global figure of 93,900 MW), even though wind conditions in many regions are excellent. Not only that, initial experience with tropical storms (in Jamaica, for example) has shown that modern wind turbines are capable of withstanding even extreme weather situations such as hurricanes without suffering serious damage.

GTZ (now GIZ) contributed to the realisation of the first wind farm in Colombia within the framework of the TERNA programme.

Further information on the various TERNA country projects in Latin America can be found via the menu on the left.
