GTZ Proklima Supports Production of Hydrocarbon Air-Conditioning Unit

Gree AC Demonstration Unit

Within the framework of the International Climate Initiative, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety is funding a project that intends to convert the production of air-conditioning systems to hydrocarbon R290 as refrigerant instead of the currently used ozone- and climate-damaging HCFC R22. The project partner is the Chinese company Gree Electric Appliances Inc., which is the largest manufacturer of air conditioners worldwide. The project also includes comprehensive training for production and service technicians; this covers the responsible and safe handling of flammable refrigerants and the maintenance of the equipment. In cooperation with technical institutions, training material is being produced and distributed in Chinese and other languages.

The demonstration unit was showcased at the 29th Open-ended Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in Geneva, Switzerland.
