Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD)
Since 2007 GIZ (former GTZ) has had a formal cooperation agreement with the Secretariat of the Convention. Agreement has been reached on joint public awareness work (e.g. exhibitions) and capacity development for national and local implementation of the convention. Here, too, the focus is on reducing poverty and maintaining biodiversity.

German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz, BfN)
There is long-established contact between BfN and GIZ. Since 1998 the annual conferences on nature conservation in development cooperation held at the BfN’s nature conservation academy on the island of Vilm have been organised jointly by BfN and GIZ (former GTZ). The regional focus of cooperation on the CBD is Africa.

Directorate General for International Cooperation (DGIS)
GIZ implements the Dutch-German “ABS Capacity Development Initiative for Africa” in consultation with and with support from the Directorate General for International Cooperation of the Dutch Foreign Office.

KfW Entwicklungsbank (KfW Development Bank)
GIZ and the KfW Entwicklungsbank (KfW Development Bank) work together on many cooperative projects, particularly those involving the management of conservation areas. They also cooperate on training and the organisation of events.

Bavarian Forest National Park
The BFNP provides many opportunities for cooperating on education for sustainable development. This cooperation has resulted in the setting up of the Bavarian Forest’s international wilderness camp with huts representing different countries. Here children, young people and adults can learn about the culture, natural environment and lifestyle of people involved in GIZ’s cooperation projects.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
GIZ’s joint work with UNESCO focuses primarily on the maintenance of biosphere reserves for conserving the world’s cultural heritage. In addition, institutions in the partner countries and Germany cooperate on the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

The World Conservation Union (IUCN)
In a number of partner countries GIZ and IUCN cooperate in supporting projects relating to the management of conservation areas. GIZ works closely with various IUCN commissions: the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) and the Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP).

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Cooperation focuses on agrobiodiversity, involving public awareness work (exhibitions) and the exchange of strategy papers.

UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative
The BioTrade Initiative was set up by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). GIZ works with the BioTrade Initiative on conceptual issues. Cooperation in the marketing of biodiversity products involves mainly the countries of South America.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
GIZ works with the FAO’s Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in the area of public awareness. GIZ’s activities in connection with implementation of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (IT) are coordinated with this Commission.

World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF)
GIZ works with the head office and national offices of the environmental organisation WWF on a large number of projects, many of them involving aspects of conservation area management.
