Over 10,000 tonnes of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) substituted and some 46 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (in CO2 equivalent) saved – this is the track record on which the Proklima sector programme can now look back on after 15 years of activity. It is anticipated that further projects under the BMU's International Climate Initiative will save a further 36 million tonnes (in CO2 equivalent). The cost of achieving a reduction of one tonne of CO2 equivalent through Proklima activities is currently at EUR 1/t.

So far, Proklima has supported partner organizations and governments in almost 40 countries with the successful implementation of measures related to ozone layer and climate protection.  The activities included governmental advice on reliable frameworks and standards, reduction of market barriers, practice oriented technology transfer integrating know-how from German and European private sectors and many more.  For example, Proklima developed sector-specific phase-out plans for F-gases for several countries in close collaboration with private companies and national environment ministries. These plans were implemented by targeted transfer of climate- and ozone-friendly technologies (“best practice”) from market leaders in Germany and other European countries to companies in partner countries. Some of the pilot projects set standards for a market transformation towards environmentally and climate-friendly alternatives. The execution of successful reference projects is perceived as promotion for forward-looking investments. In doing so, Proklima is respected as a competent partner and a fair broker for negotiation processes between developed and developing countries.

Most important project impacts include:
  • Emission reductions of environmentally harmful greenhouse and ozone-depleting gases including energy savings (increased energy efficiency)
  • Cost-efficient climate and ozone layer protection
  • Know-how transfer
  • Influencing market development (“green growth”) and legislation in partner countries in favor of natural gases
