Approach

jordan methylbromide workshop

Since 1995, Proklima supports developing countries in complying with their obligations under the Montreal Protocol. Working for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and since 2008 also within the framework of the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), Proklima’s activities include mainly technology transfer and capacity development towards replacing the use of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and greenhouse gases. These are fluorinated gases such as CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs typically used in refrigeration and air conditioning applications, and as blowing agents to produce various kinds of foams. The main focus is to promote the use of sustainable ozone- and climate-friendly alternative technologies based on natural refrigerants and blowing agents such as hydrocarbons and CO2.

Although Proklima was launched to help protect the ozone layer, protection of the global climate was always part of its overall strategy.

Today, Proklima cooperates with almost 40 countries in Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America in the fields of refrigeration, foam blowing, firefighting equipment and agriculture. Activities here range from solar-powered fridges for vaccines at health stations in rural areas of southern Africa, to the introduction of climate-friendly room air conditioners in China. Proklima is cooperating with many innovative companies to transfer environmentally-friendly technology in developing countries and to strengthen worldwide green growth.
