Volkswagen - International Labour Organization (ILO)

Workers in the automobile industry

According to ILO estimates, around 160 million workers worldwide fall ill as a result of insufficient safety measures and inadequate working conditions. In developing countries, accidents in the workplace are six times more likely to be fatal than in industrialised countries.

The VW Group, GTZ and ILO have joined forces to develop action plans for health and safety in the workplace in Brazil, Mexico and South Africa.
ILO develops curricula and trains OHS inspectors to implement the national action plans. The VW Group is developing a process optimisation system for suppliers. OHS standards are adapted to international standards. Based on these experiences ILO intends to develop guidelines for small and medium-sized enterprises.

GTZ is responsible for monitoring the results of the entire project. It also contributes its experience and expertise in the field of HIV/Aids in the workplace.
