GTZ China – German Partner for Sustainable Development

With 25 years experience in technical cooperation in China, GTZ is continuously tailoring its portfolio to support China’s transition processes. Initially, GTZ implemented Sino-German projects at a grass-roots level. In the 80ies, it focused on vocational training and poverty alleviation.

Today, GTZ fosters China’s reform process as outlined in the 11th Five-Year-Plan, to build a harmonious, resources-saving society and strive for a balance between economic growth, social equality and environmental protection. The challenges of resource efficiency and climate change feature highly on GTZ’s agenda.

Currently, GTZ is active in providing policy advice to high-ranking decision-making institutions and holding international dialogues with national decision makers promoting sustainable development in many aspects. It offers technical advisory services for pilot projects in both the public and private sectors. GTZ’s main client is the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

At present, about 30 seconded experts and 100 national personnel are involved in 28 projects and in 22 Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives.

GTZ China priority areas

In China, GTZ operates in fields in which German actors have a unique experience and comparative advantages. By virtue of the longstanding nature of its cooperation and the specific know-how of German experts, GTZ has developed close ties with Chinese networks. Hence, GTZ fulfils a supporting function for all German-Chinese cooperation.
