GIZ is assisting its partner countries in implementing their Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRSs) sustainably and appropriately to meet each particular country's needs. By doing so, we are helping to achieve the MDGs throughout the world and to reduce structural poverty.

Capacity development, GIZ's core competence, plays a crucial role in achieving this goal. Support is based on developing a coherent framework for comprehensive reforms, allowing a dialogue to be initiated between the state and civil society. In addition, capacity building at existing institutions and upgrading for decision-makers in government, parliament and civil society is necessary for PRSs to have the intended effect.

GIZ's efforts are guided by the global challenge of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 and effectively addressing poverty in all its dimensions. In order to secure the progress made on a lasting basis, GIZ relies on the responsibility its partners assume for their own countries. In addition, ongoing dialogue is sought with other donor organisations, and common priorities are set. Finally, GIZ is employing new concepts and methods to record and evaluate the results of Technical Cooperation measures.

The German Government has specifically acknowledged its commitment to the HIPC initiative and the PRS process. Promotion of national PRSs is an integral part of its Programme of Action 2015, a comprehensive policy programme drawn up to support the Millennium Declaration.
