escaping the flood

Disasters, such as the floods which hit eastern Germany in summer 2002, vividly illustrate the impact that such events can have on development, even in industrialised countries. However, the efforts of developing countries are influenced or hindered by a variety of factors. Apart from exceptional events, such as the tsunami in South-East Asia, it is primarily the everyday conditions on the ground that are decisive for development success.

Here are two examples:

  • Gender and literacy: the majority of women in rural regions in Cameroon market their agricultural produce themselves. In order to compete, they must be given the same opportunities as men to learn to read and write.

  • HIV/AIDS: in South Africa, DaimlerChrysler has set up a comprehensive programme for its workforce that aims to combat HIV/AIDS and to treat the resulting illnesses. The employees benefit directly, and the company achieves workforce continuity. Both effects are highly relevant in terms of the employment situation and social costs.

GTZ addresses such critical influencing factors as a matter of priority. It is proceeding on all societal levels in order to achieve sustainable results.
