GIZ (former GTZ) has participated in the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin for many years. Since 2005 GTZ shares a booth with its partner organisations InWEnt and DED.

In 2005, GIZ (former GTZ) organised the public discussion "Good jobs or bad jobs - tourism, social responsibility and labour standards". Stakeholders from industry, unions and non-governmental organisations debated sustainability standards and certification models, as well as social and ecological quality criteria in tourism.

In 2006, GIZ (former GTZ) and Messe Berlin took a closer look at energy costs in hotels. In times of skyrocketing fuel prices, fuel conservation is a topic of increasing importance for the hotel sector. In addition, the sustainable tourism model favours a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. In a panel debate titled "Energy Efficiency and Solar Energy in the Hotel Sector", panellists discussed technological and financial options and examples of best practice.

In 2007 GIZ (former GTZ) held a stand-up reception for "Development Cooperation Workers in Tourism". Experts and other interested visitors used the opportunity to get to know each other and exchange ideas over breakfast.

In 2008, GIZ (former GTZ) once again received many visitors and presented its projects. Highlighted was the GIZ supported project “Tourism in the Danube region”.

At the ITB 2009 an entire day was dedicated to the topic "Corporate Social Responsibility". In this context, Burghard Rauschelbach explained how GIZ (former GTZ) promotes tourism and what we do to combat desertification. At the "ITB Hospitality Day", Klaus Lengefeld moderated the panel discussion on the topic "Integrated Resorts. An evolution towards sustainability." Mr Lengefeld also participated as a speaker in the 11th German-Arabic Tourism Forum, which took place during the ITB on March 11th.

In 2010, GIZ participated with presentations during the Latin America Forum, the CSR day and the “Pow Wow for Trade Visitors”. At the Latin America Forum under the topic “Sustainability in Latin America – A Trendy Topic or the Future?”, Klaus Lengefeld (GIZ, former GTZ) related some pertinent experiences of GIZ. The "Pow Wow for Trade Visitors" organised an event on Haiti where Klaus Lengefeld discussed development perspectives for Haiti through Sustainable Tourism. The Allianz selbständiger Reiseunternehmen – Bundesverband e.V. (asr) presented the Public-Private-Partnership Programme between GIZ and asr during the event “green travel bridge”.
