Children and youth in Development CooperationIn several developing countries children and adolescents account for more than half of the population. In other words, they represent an enormous social development potential that can only be fully realised if the younger generation becomes more involved in political, economic and social processes. However, for this to happen, policy-makers and society need to give greater consideration to their needs and concerns. Children and adolescents have a right to be heard, as enshrined in the 1990 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Virtually all member states of the United Nations have ratified the convention and thereby pledged to implement children’s rights. Yet in many ountries these rights are still violated on a daily basis. Children and adolescents are barred from access to education and work, they are victims of violence and exploitation, and are unable to participate in political processes. These violations prevent them from participating adequately in politics and society and lead to phenomena such as youth violence. This is a challenge for development in partner countries. German development cooperation empowers children and adolescents to assert their rights and play an active role in changing their situation. It supports partner countries in implementing their obligations under international agreements. The result is a process that integrates children and adolescents in society and gives them a future perspective. Please visit the following pages for further information about GIZ work:
