Responding to AIDS

A poster of GTZ's HIV workplace programme

"Every generation faces its great challenge. The fight against HIV/AIDS may be ours."
(Kofi Annan)

Within only 25 years, HIV has become the worst pandemic the world has seen, with disastrous social and economic consequences for many regions. The pandemic is wiping out the successes of decades of development efforts in a large number of countries.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ), GTZ advises institutions and decision-makers in German development cooperation and cooperation partners in developing countries on the response to AIDS.

For instance GTZ...

  • publishes a compilation of the practical experience gained with HIV in German development cooperation
  • helps the German government meet its commitments to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
  • initiates and provides back-up for programmes to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in East Africa in conjunction with research institutes and local health services
  • designs twinning arrangements between German clinics and hospitals in partner countries.
