Project Examples

GIZ (former GTZ) successfully pursues activities in the field of HIV since more than 20 years, operating in more than 40 countries worldwide. At global, regional, national and local level, GIZ supports capacity development needed for an effective HIV response. For this, GIZ cooperates with governments, civil society and the private sector. The following three examples can illustrate the diverse activities in the field of HIV:

Awareness-raising in Cameroon
In Cameroon GIZ supports training and networking for unwed young mothers ‘aunties‘, who provide other young women with information about sexual health and HIV. More than 12,000 ‘aunties’ provide about 300,000 young people per year with information. The number of young women regularly using condoms has increased through trainings. The young women are trained to take action against sexual violence.
German-Cameroonian health and AIDS programme

Reducing the harm of injecting drug use in Asia
GIZ (former GTZ) and CompWare Medical support national AIDS and drug programmes in Asia to expand substitution programmes for injected drug users. This has decreased the high-risk behaviour and the number of persons dropping out of treatment.  Infections associated with intravenous drug use, such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis are reduced and treated. Patients embark on social rehabilitation measures.
Asia: Methadone programme for drug users

Regional HIV ‘Knowledge Hub’
The approach „HIV Knowledge hub“ developed by the BACKUP Initiativeand the World Health Organization is implemented in Eastern Europe and Africa. Studies prove the potential of the approach and the effective integration of training and advice. Since 2007 knowledge hubs trained 11000 professionals and provided technical assistance to several dozens of countries within south south cooperations.
