Women, children and young people are particularly hard hit

The proportion of women and young girls infected with the HIV virus worldwide has increased from 35 to almost 50 percent, and in sub-Saharan Africa it is over 60 percent. For biological, cultural and socio-economic reasons, women are particularly susceptible to HIV infection.

40 percent of new infections each year concern people between the ages of 15 and 24.

Young children with HIV infection have a limited life expectancy in many developing countries.

15 million children have lost their mother and/or father because of AIDS.
