The causes

Impoverishment and lack of prospects can lead to the destruction of social systems. Parents sell their children, sometimes in the hope that they will escape from poverty in this way. Street children have to make their own living. Intrafamily abuse in childhood prompts minors to sell their bodies for money. A desire to share in the world of consumption can also play a role.

The weak social position of children and women, a lack of a sense of wrongdoing, tolerance or social taboos against speaking of it all promote sexual exploitation The erroneous assumption that sex with children is a way to avoid HIV also boosts demand. Fear of defamation and loss of face for the family within the community, unfavourable experience with police and inefficient law enforcement mean that many of those affected and their relatives hesitate to report cases. The perpetrators benefit from this.
