Since 2004 GIZ (former GTZ) has been implementing measures against commercial sexual exploitation of children in various countries of Asia, Latin America and the Balkans. It promotes prevention of gender-based violence against children and youth both in its own right and as an integral element of projects and programmes addressing themes such as women's rights.

Following examples demonstrate that training for professionals working with children are of particular importance. The results of further measures focussing on tourism, capacity development and prevention are presented on the page downloads.

Cambodia: Psycho-social approach in victim support
Girls and women who have become victims of gender-based violence often receive inadequate support. It is for this reason that they suffer from lifelong consequences and may not be able to cope with their trauma. In Cambodia, the non-governmental organisation Social Services of Cambodia provides a holistic training on gender-based violence for social workers. The GIZ (former GTZ) facilitates the curricula development in psycho-social approaches of victim support, training of trainers and networking. The training approach is now a model for other governmental and non-governmental organisations and has been extended with further training modules.

Guatemala: Capacity Development of Police and Judiciary
Children and youth are seldom identified by the police, migration authorities or judiciary as victims of sexual exploitation. The use of inappropriate interrogation techniques often lead to false accusations and discrimination. The partner organisation ECPAT Guatemala informs the officers about the local jurisdiction and human rights of the affected children and reveals the linking of gender, masculinity and power relations. Also attorneys participated in the trainings. The high interest of the Public Prosecution Service resulted in producing a manual on guidelines in criminal prosecution against commercial sexual exploitation of children.
