Urban development in detail

The “urban millennium” (Kofi Annan) has begun: in 2008, more than half of the global population will live in cities. By 2030, there will be 2 billion new urban dwellers (180,000 daily), practically all of them in developing countries.

The people in these expanding cities need jobs, housing, safe drinking water, provision of goods and facilities for sewage and waste disposal, health care, education and affordable transportation.

Governments, administrations, civil organisations and the private sector recognise that they must take action in view of the explosive growth of the urban population in developing countries.

GIZ is aware of the challenges confronting city planners and managers. It has been carrying out urban development projects for three decades, working with partners in many Asian, African, Latin American and Caribbean countries, mostly on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

For example Brazil
In Brazil, GIZ (former GTZ) has over a period of twelve years promoted a dialogue between city administrations and residents of poor districts (favelas). Where communication barriers and silence once prevailed, today readiness to discuss and cooperate is taken for granted. Particularly successful is an urban district credit fund. This is managed by the residents themselves and offers promotional instruments tailored to the needs of the extremely poor, and it even provides a credit card (Banco Palmas). The model has attracted attention throughout Brazil.
