Trafficking in Women

Human trafficking is a growing sector. Worldwide, it has now reached a magnitude comparable to that of the illicit drugs and arms trades. The majority of victims are women and children, who are forced into exploitative labour and prostitution. The root causes of this flourishing trade can be found in the precarious economic situations, high unemployment, and lack of prospects of a better future in the countries of origin of the victims, along with the continuing demand in recipient countries.

Efforts to put an end to trafficking must fight simultaneously in the countries of origin of trafficked persons, in transit countries and in destination countries. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has taken up the challenge, and in July 2003 commissioned the GTZ to implement a "Project against Trafficking in Women" within the scope of the German Government's Programme of Action 2015.

The aim of the new project is to offer German and international partners expertise in the fight against trafficking in women, and to improve the range of services available to victims.

In cooperation with the Federal Criminal Police Office we organised a study tour for police officers and non-governmental organisations (NGO)s from Lithuania: "In Germany we finally succeeded in overcoming barriers. Prior to this journey teamwork between the police and NGOs did not exist. Now NGOs are even present during raids in order to advise women on the spot."
