Other conventions on chemicalsVienna Convention – Montreal ProtocolIn the 1980s, the 1985 Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer and the 1987 Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances raised awareness of international environmental and chemical issues. The goal of both agreements is the controlled phasing out of the production and use of ozone-depleting substances. To this end, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is funding a project of its own, which is being implemented by GIZ: Proklima. The Basel ConventionThe 1989 Basel Convention controls transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal. Under this convention, the export, import and transport of wastes is permitted only if all of the countries involved have been notified in advance and given their consent. Moving toxic wastes to non-party states is categorically prohibited. The Chemical Weapons ConventionThe Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993 aims for a ban on and elimination of all types of chemical weapons and for strict and effective international controls. It prohibits signatory states to develop or use chemical weapons under any circumstances, and requires that they destroy all chemical weapons stockpiled in their territories. Links:
